PRE-OPERATIVE:
- Provide us with your medical history and lab exams
- Discontinue using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure as these act as blood thinners
- It is advisable not to smoke for at least two weeks prior and one after the surgery as nicotine can impair circulation and healing
- Avoid sun exposure as not to irritate the skin.
SURGERY:
The technique for this procedure depends of the nature of the mammary tissue. Gynecomastia can be treated with liposuction only. Sometimes, however, the tissue is so dense that an incision must be made around the areola to remove it. If a lot of extra skin is present with or without a large areola, different types of skin reduction procedures must be done depending on the amount of skin that must be removed. Needless to say that if a skin reduction procedure is necessary, the scar will be hidden in the most unnoticeable place possible. Gynecomasty surgery can be done as an outpatient procedure (depending on the amount of reduction necessary) under sedation and local anaesthesia.
POST SURGERY:
Some bruising, swelling and very mild pain could be expected for the couple of days but medication will be prescribed to minimise this discomfort. The same day you should be up and walking around. You may shower on the second or third day following the surgery and should refrain from lifting heavy objects, and driving for approximately 15 days. Stitches will be removed 15 days after surgery.
SUMARY:
- Surgery length: 1 or 3 hours
- Anaesthesia: local with sedation, epidural or general
- Clinic or hospital internment: day clinic or 1 night as inpatient
- Post surgery: when necessary, stitches removed after 15 days
- Physical activities: walking, resume after 1week, gymnastics after 8 weeks
MALE BREAST REDUCTION
(Gynecomasty)
DESCRIPTION:
Gynecomastia refers to male breast development to a larger size than what is considered normal or acceptable. The gynecomastia could be a result of ingestion of certain medications, drugs, or steroids. Sometimes an overweight man can also have the appearance of having large breasts although they usually contain mostly fat. Some males not only have large breast tissue but also a large areola.
