PRE-OPERATIVE:
- Provide us with your medical history and lab exams
- Discontinue using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure as these act as blood thinners
- It is advisable not to smoke for at least two weeks prior and one after the surgery as nicotine can impair circulation and healing
- Avoid sun exposure as not to irritate the skin
SURGERY:
Typically performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, breast augmentation may last between one and two hours. Incisions are made in inconspicuous places on the breast to minimize scar visibility. These may be located:
- Around the areola, the dark skin around the nipple (periareolar)
- In the crease on the underside of the breast (inframammary)
- In the armpit (transaxillary position)
POST SURGERY:
You could expect some bruising, swelling and a very mild pain for the first week or two but medication will be prescribed to minimise this discomfort. Within a day of the surgery you should be up and walking around. You may shower on the second or third day following the surgery but should refrain from lifting heavy objects. Driving is permitted and you may move your arms freely. Stitches will be removed 15 days after surgery.
Capsule Contracture – The formation of a fine, flabby, fibrous lining (capsule) around the implants is normal and occurs in all surgeries. The contraction of this fibrous membrane (capsule) can occur rarely in 2-4% of cases, thus modifying the result. The treatment of capsule contracture requires a new surgery.
SUMARY:
- Surgery length: 1 to 2 hours.
- Anaesthesia: local with sedation, epidural or general.
- Clinic or hospital internment: day clinic or 1 night as inpatient.
- Post surgery: stitches removed after 15 days.
- Physical activities: walking, resume after 2 weeks, gymnastics after 4 weeks.
BREAST AUGMENTATION
(Augmentation Mammaplasty)
DESCRIPTION:
This procedure can improve the contour of the breasts by increasing their size, enhancing their shape, correcting proportional imbalances and improving firmness to small, underdeveloped breasts or those that have decreased in size after pregnancy. It entails a fair amount of considerations including the person’s height, body habitus, chest wall measurements and the desired breast size and shape. A Breast Lift might be performed too for more satisfying results. Other additional considerations may be taken , which include implant location (behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle), implant type (round or teardrop shape), incision placement (armpit, around the areola or beneath the breast). Each consideration should be individualized to each respective patient. Silicone gel- filled breast implants, with texture surface, are the best option.
