PRE-OPERATIVE:
- Provide us with your medical history and lab exams
- Discontinue using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure as these act as blood thinners
- It is advisable not to smoke for at least two weeks prior to and one after the surgery as nicotine can impair circulation and healing
Avoid sun exposure as not to irritate the skin
SURGERY:
Full tummy tuck procedures typically require two incisions. There is one incision just above the pubic area that spans from one hip bone to the other. The length of the incision and its shape will depend on the extent of the treatment as well as your body contours and it will be placed so as to be concealed by a bathing suit or under garment. A second incision is usually made around the navel. The abdomen muscle tissue is tightened to provide a firmly contoured stomach and well-defined waistline. Typically the procedure lasts from two to five hours and can be performed with epidural or general anaesthesia. Tummy tuck procedures can be performed alone, but are often performed with liposuction to further improve body contours.
POST SURGERY:
Generally, post-operative instructions call for rest and limited movement, however walking is encouraged early. As with any major surgical procedure, you will likely experience pain, bruising, and swelling, most of which will subside in a few days and be greatly minimized with medication. Drains are typically placed and instructions are provided for drain care. A supportive abdominal binder is worn postoperatively. Normal activities can generally be resumed within two weeks. With proper diet and exercise the striking results of the surgery will be long lasting. Stitches will be removed in approximately two weeks, whereas sutures may remain in place for up to two weeks.
SUMARY:
- Surgery length: 2 to 5 hours
- Anaesthesia: local with sedation, epidural or general
- Clinic or hospital internment: 1 night as inpatient
- Post surgery: usage of supportive abdominal binder. Stitches removed after 2 weeks
- Physical activities: resume after 4 to 6 weeks
TUMMY TUCK
(Abdominoplasty)
DESCRIPTION:
A "tummy tuck," or an abdominoplasty is the surgical removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightening of the abdominal wall muscles. This procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen, flattening its shape, and recreating a waistline that has otherwise been stretched over time. Abdominoplasty is indicated for people who have a flabby abdomen with not only excess fatty deposits but also excess loose, hanging skin. The surgery is particularly helpful for men and women who, through episodes of weight gain and loss or pregnancy, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.
